Deadline Alert: North Slope Borough Student Scholarships

By Shady Grove Oliver for the Arctic Sounder:

Scholarship deadlines approaching for Arctic students

Scholarship deadlines are fast approaching for North Slope Borough and Northwest Arctic students hoping to get some extra help moving on with their educations.

There are a handful of scholarships handed out each year to local students or students who are also shareholders.

Applications for the Anaġi Leadership Award are due April 15. The award is named for former Arctic Slope Regional Corp. President Jacob Anaġi Adams and centers around students’ leadership experience while in school.

Up to $20,000 per year is given to the awardee to cover tuition, fees, books, room, and board as they attend college or technical training for up to four years.

The Ivalu Scholarship, which awards a student up to $15,000 per year for college or training expenses, was started to recognize students making cultural contributions to their communities “which strongly incorporate the Inupiaq values,” the award material states. Applications for the scholarship are due April 30.

The June Nelson Memorial Scholarship is awarded each year by the Association of Alaska School Boards and is open to students around the state who are graduating during the 2016-2017 school year.

“The [scholarship] is named in honor of the late June Nelson, longtime school board member from Kotzebue,” the application states. “June contributed much to the cause of education, and will be remembered for her outstanding service on behalf of Alaska’s children.”

The association will award 10 students with a $1,200 scholarship to go toward continuing education. Applications are due March 24.

These are just a handful of local and statewide scholarships open to students. More information can be found on the North Slope Borough School District’s website, www.nsbsd.org, or by contacting your local school district or student affairs office.
